How Indie Are You?

The pandemic has dramatically shaped the Philippine publishing industry, and health restrictions and limitations on holding and attending physical events have also hampered the book industry in the country.

Global publishing trends have shown a downward trend in 2021. In its Global Book Publishing report, IBIS World notes that the market size for the worldwide publishing industry has decreased faster than the global economy, and the sector has also shrunk compared to other manufacturing sectors. As of this writing, international book publishing ranks 32nd of 65 major sectors.

In the Philippines, mainstream publishers, backed by academic institutions, companies, and corporations, have restructured operations and have weathered the economic blows of the pandemic, as evidenced by the continuing production and distribution of print and electronic books.

Mainstream publishers have the general ability to fall back on more considerable capital and other resources, while independent publishers, authors, and other creatives cannot. Nevertheless, financial limitations are a huge burden, and the narrowing avenues for reaching intended audiences and distributing them cannot be ignored.

Amid the chaos, which necessarily involves both the public and private sectors, it is crucial for independent publishers, hand in hand with authors and other creators, to survey and analyze the changing landscape of literature and publishing in the Philippines. However, to “be indie” in the new regular poses additional, unforeseen difficulties that creatives and small publishers have not encountered before.

A special roundtable, How Indie Are You?, to be hosted by Karl Orit of the Cavite Young Writers Association (CYWA) and Criselda Santos of 8Letters Bookstore & Publishing will take place. This will be a two-hour discussion that will premiere on November 20, 2021 at 6:00 p.m., and can be viewed via TIPC-PH’s Facebook Page and YouTube channel.

Attending the roundtable discussion are MJ Cagumbay Tumamaca (Xi Zuq) of Aklat Alamid, Sarge Lacuesta of Good Intentions, Pia Perez of Southern Voices, Noel G. de Leon of Kasingkasing Press, Cindy Wong-Cortez of 8Letters, Christian De Jesus of UNGAZ PRESS, and Ronald Verzo of Balangay Books.

According to the organizers, people now miss attending physical events. Sometimes, even the smaller gatherings by independent presses are better because the people are closer, and there is a more intimate feeling when attending these events. However, the question remains—amidst the longing for a return to the previous normal and perhaps better conditions for everyone, how is independent publishing today? How are independent publishers coping with the reduction in sales and other issues that prevent normal operations? What is the book industry’s continuing role, and where is everyone situated in these difficult, transforming times? And is there a future waiting for creatives and independent publishers alike?

These hard-hitting questions aim to shed light on the material conditions of those who can’t help but be on the ground. The books we hold and cherish rarely reveal how they were made—and now, independent publishers and creatives are opening the well-worn doors of non-mainstream presses to show everyone exactly what they’ve been missing.

Legalities of Indie Publishing

A growing number of Filipino authors are self-publishing their own books, and the book industry is flourishing. Self-publishing and small-scale publishing companies in the Philippines can enable Filipino authors of all ages and backgrounds to reach new audiences.

Getting a book published can be a challenge for new authors. Unfortunately, fewer books were published each year due to high inventory costs and limited funding resources.

It was the most challenging element of all when it came to paying for the enormous minimum print run. Despite the pandemic’s end, there is still a socioeconomic disparity in the country that needs to be bridged.

Traditional self-publishing, typically a laborious and expensive undertaking for the author, is the other option. Typesetting, layouts, obtaining an ISBN number, and most importantly, registering copyrights were some of the arduous processes they had to deal with while working on their own book.

Those rights inherently belong to the creator of an original work of authorship like a book, music, film, or piece of software. Thus, they are referred to as “copyrights.” Reproducing, creating derivative works, distributing copies, performing, and displaying the work publicly are examples of these rights.

By providing authors with property rights, copyright aims to encourage them to create new works and make them available to the public for easier availability. As a result, creators benefit financially, and the public benefits from creative works that wouldn’t otherwise have been generated or disseminated if copyright laws weren’t in place to safeguard their intellectual property.

The Indie Publishers Collab – PH’s (TIPC-PH) goal is to introduce publishing to make it more accessible for the writers. Writers can now have the creative freedom to publish and market their own books without the need for established printers and publishers.

For this online discussion, Kath Eustaquio-Derla of PaperKat Books will discuss the tedious process of self-publishing, focusing on its legalities. Additionally, this webinar will discuss the necessary steps and guidelines a new writer-publisher must follow to abide by the printing and publishing guidelines within the country.

Kath Eustaquio-Derla is the brainchild behind PaperKat Books, the publishing arm under HK Grafik Print. This humble small design and print company is based in Pasig City. It is solely operated by the NBDB registered author, book publisher, and book printer.

Interested participants are expected to pre-register using the TIPC-PH’s registration form. This discussion will be open for the public and is part of the five-day event of INDIEPUBCON 2021 with the theme “Claiming Indie Spaces in Challenging Times.”

Catch the discussion “Legalities of Indie Publishing” on Saturday, November 20, starting at 4:00 p.m. on TIPC-PH’s Facebook Page and Youtube channel. Additional insights from National Book Development Board will also be included in this insightful discussion.

Pagbali sa Utos ng Hari: Malayang Paglalathala bilang Dayalogo Kontra-Gahum

The Indie Publishers Collab – PH (TIPC-PH) wishes to bring together as many dissenting voices this year at the INDIEPUBCON 2021 as the line to critically read and change the publishing landscape in these trying times. Among the many fascinating themes in this year’s INDIECON is hegemony. Simplified, hegemony refers to the dominance of a social group or class over one or more groups/classes. This sociological and anthropological concept has been explored for over half a century now and is considered a significant study area in continental European theory, from post-structuralism to postmodernism.

Italian thinker Antonio Gramsci further developed the concept to encompass other coordinates in the field, to shed light on how material practices (including language, habits, and more) became part of cultural hegemony, which is crucial to maintaining the power of the state and the ruling classes. The French thinker Louis Althusser further complicated the relations between the base and superstructure in Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses. He expanded on how practice was maintained and reproduced by different institutions such as the family, the police, and the school.

On the other hand, counterhegemony is seen as the antidote to the domination of one social class over another. Since the material coordinates in the field are determined by behavior and practice, counterhegemonic practices are required to challenge the status quo—consequently leading to the dismantling of oppressive apparatuses of power and domination.

The never-ending quest for justice and change in the Third World, coupled with the limitations of independent publishing as it attempts to challenge the matrices of power and domination, is the crux of the “Pagbali sa Utos ng Hari: Malayang Paglalathala Bilang Dayalogo Kontra-Gahum.” This is a crucial and timely roundtable discussion featuring Jun Cruz Reyes, Allan Derain, Ronaldo Soledad Vivo, Jr., and Natalya Patolot. The roundtable discussion will be moderated by the editor-in-chief of Vox Populi PH, Maria Kristelle Jimenez.

Jun Cruz Reyes hails from Bulacan and was an Assistant Professor at the DFPP in UP Diliman from 1993 to 2004. He is also a SEA Write Awardee (2014). Jun Cruz Reyes was also given the Gawad Alagad ni Balagtas by the Unyon ng Manunulat sa Pilipinas in 2002.

Allan Derain is a multi-awarded author of Iskrapbuk, Pangontra, The Next Great Tagalog Novel at Iba Pang Kuwento, Banal na Aklat ng mga Kumag (which won the National Book Award, Carlos Palanca Memorial Award Grand prize and the Reader’s Choice Award) and Aswanglaut. Maria Kristelle Jimenez is a freelance writer, layout artist, and website design specialist based in Pampanga. Some of her works have been recognized by the Saranggola Blog Awards and the Gawad Digmaang Rosas. Marya, as he is affectionately called by her peers, is also the author of “Salamín: Mga Personal na Prosa” (Rebo Press, 2020). She is the founder of Rebo Press Book Publishing, the current associate editor in Filipino of Revolt Magazine PH, and the editor-in-chief of Vox Populi PH.

Pagbali sa Utos ng Hari: Malayang Paglalathala Bilang Dayalogo Kontra-Gahum will tackle several interstices of counterhegemonic practice in publishing, including taking up an anti-establishment position by way of independent publishing and the historical track of counterhegemonic writing from the Spanish colonial era to the present time. There will also be discussion areas that will tackle the question on the market, its characteristics, the impact of demand on committed independent writing (or otherwise), and how students can consume/process these writings.
